Today is your arrival day, and no activities are scheduled, so you can arrive at any time. Upon landing at Lima’s airport, our representative will be waiting for you with a sign displaying your name and will transfer you to your hotel.
Lima, the capital of Peru, is also known as the «City of Kings» as it was founded by Francisco Pizarro on Epiphany (Three Kings’ Day) in 1535. The historic Plaza de Armas (Main Square) is the heart of colonial Lima, home to landmarks such as the Cathedral of Lima, the Government Palace, and the Archbishop’s Palace.
After breakfast, we transfer you to Lima’s airport for your flight to Puerto Maldonado, a city deep in the Peruvian rainforest. From there, we board a motorized boat and navigate the Madre de Dios River to reach our jungle lodge. Along the way, you may spot birds such as the black skimmer, pied lapwing, capped heron, roadside hawk (Buteo magnirostris), kingfisher, swallow, and tyrant flycatcher.
The lodge blends native architecture with sustainable technology to minimize environmental impact. While rooms are simple yet comfortable, they include mosquito nets, flush toilets, showers (cold water only), and kerosene lamps (no electricity). The staff and multilingual naturalist guides are primarily from local communities.
Each day, you’ll explore the Amazon jungle with our expert guide. Covering nearly half of Peru’s territory, the Amazon Basin is one of the world’s most biodiverse regions. The Tambopata National Reserve is home to over 1,300 bird species (including 32 parrot species—10% of the world’s total!), 200 mammal species, 90 frog species, 1,200 butterfly species, and 10,000 plant species. Notable wildlife includes the harpy eagle, hoatzin, tapir, peccary, jaguar, ocelot, and playful river otters in the oxbow lakes.
On the third day, we return to Puerto Maldonado’s airport for your flight to Cusco, high in the Andes. Upon arrival, our representative will welcome you and transfer you to your hotel. The rest of the day is free to acclimate to the altitude and explore Cusco at your own pace.
Today, we embark on one of the most scenic journeys of the trip—exploring the Sacred Valley. This fertile valley, once the breadbasket of the Inca Empire, remains an important agricultural hub. Due to its 600-meter lower altitude than Cusco, it enjoys a warmer and more pleasant climate.
We stay overnight in Ollantaytambo, soaking in the town’s historic atmosphere before beginning the Inca Trail the next day.
This 4-day trek is challenging but rewarding, covering 44 km (27 miles) and crossing three high-altitude passes, with the highest reaching 4,200 m (13,776 ft). Nighttime temperatures may drop below freezing, and occasional rain is possible, even in the dry season.
Alternative Option (Free of Charge)If you prefer not to hike, you can:
After the Inca Trail, enjoy a relaxing day in Cusco. You can:
Today, we take a scenic tourist bus from Cusco to Puno, stopping at key sites along the Sun Route:
We start the day with a comfortable motorboat ride to explore the breathtaking Amantani and Taquile islands, as well as the famous floating islands of Lake Titicaca. Along the way, we stop to take in the stunning scenery and meet the welcoming communities that inhabit these unique islands.
Lake Titicaca sits at an altitude of 3,830 meters (12,566 feet) above sea level, leading to extreme weather conditions—cold nights and strong sunshine during the day. The city of Puno, located on the lake’s shores, is known for its rich tradition of folk dances, with over 100 different varieties often performed during Catholic festival processions.
A popular optional activity while in Puno is a visit to the Chullpas of Sillustani, an impressive site of pre-Incan Colla funerary towers set against a picturesque landscape.
Lake Titicaca is the largest lake in the world above 2,000 meters and the highest navigable lake in the world! Our first stop is at the floating islands of the Uros people, who began their unique way of life centuries ago to escape conflict with the Colla and Inca tribes. Sadly, their original language has gone extinct, and today’s Uros people speak Aymara, due to intermarriage with Aymara-speaking communities.
Approximately 300 families still live on the islands, though their numbers are slowly declining. These islands are made from totora reeds, which grow in the shallow waters of the lake. As the lower layers rot, fresh totora is continuously added on top. Totora is also used to build houses, boats, and even small model boats that serve as souvenirs. Constructing a real totora boat can take up to six months!
After visiting the Uros Floating Islands, we continue to Amantani Island, where we are welcomed by friendly locals and enjoy breathtaking views of Lake Titicaca. We explore the island with our guide and experience local traditions by staying overnight in family homes, offering an authentic cultural experience.
The next morning, after breakfast with our host families, we continue to Taquile Island, famous for its exquisite handwoven textiles. The textile craftsmanship here is regarded as the finest in Peru, earning UNESCO recognition in 2005.
Following our exploration of this remarkable island and its panoramic lake views, we return to Puno in the afternoon, where you will be transferred from the port to your hotel.
Enjoy a relaxed day in Puno, with free time to explore the city, visit its markets, buy souvenirs, or take optional excursions such as a visit to the Chullpas of Sillustani. Spend your last evening in Puno at your leisure.
After breakfast, we transfer you to the Juliaca Airport, located near Puno, for your flight to Lima.
